Day Οne: Our Delphi Meteora tour from Athens starts on the highway, driving via the towns of Thebes, Levadia and the village of Arachova. Arachova is a picturesque settlement and famous winter destination built on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Our first stop will be at the Archaeological Site and the Oracle of Delphi.
After our visit to Delphi we will depart for Kalambaka. This journey will take us through the traditional settlements and majestic towns of Central Greece. Our final destination for the day is Kalambaka, where we will enjoy dinner and relax for the rest of the evening.
Day Two: A few minutes walk from the town of Kalambaka will give us the opportunity to admire the cliffs of Meteora. The complex of Meteora is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and panoramic view. Each cliff is host to one of the many Byzantine Monasteries which were built on top of the rock formations. We'll visit two of these Byzantine monasteries, the guardians of priceless historical and religious treasures through the centuries. Appearing as if they stand between the earth and the sky, on massive detached stone pinnacles, 400 metres above the ground. Meteora is one of Christianity’s holiest places as well as a landscape of outstanding natural beauty. Thousands of visitors arrive here every year, as this «stone forest» is a place where natural and man-made blend into one perfect landscape.
Meteora is the second largest monastic and pilgrimage area in Greece, the first being Mount Athos. The early monks found shelter on these cliff tops as they had to flee, due to an invasion of the Turkish army in the 11th-century a.C. Several monasteries were built in the following centuries while all building materials had to be winched up in baskets by the use of human effort.
Until the 1920's, this was the only way for getting supplies and people up to these monasteries. According to historical sources, there once were thirty thriving religious communities. Today, however, six of them still operate and remain open to the public.
On our return, we will pass by the cities of Trikala, Lamia and make a short visit to Thermopylae to take a glance at Leonida’s Monument.
The road trip will take us back to Athens, early in the same evening, signalling the end of our adventurous excursion, the «2-Day Delphi and Meteora Tour From Athens».
